Vito is our 24th Leonberger in 20 years.
All our puppies are precious and special, but Vito is an extra special little boy, going back to our original lines from Siska & Sweedy, four generations down the line. Our late Tasha his Great Grandma, Neo his Great Grandpa & Coco & Sultan are his grand parents., both are still here with us. We have both his Mum and Dad living here too. This is a lovely and diverse pedigree combining a wide range of European, Scandinavian & Canadian lines. I can actually remember his Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandpa, Hungarian, Kiserdei Vidocq in 2007, in France, having dinner with his head under my arm waiting for any leftovers. Vidocq was seven then; he is in the background of many Leonbergers today. I fondly remember his 5th Great Grandma also in France, she was ten years old, Sixta V D Hirschhalde (Elza) Photo of her with us in 2010 in the gallery below. It's an honour to still be working with the lines from these beautiful dogs, sixteen years later.
Vito is actually named after a beautiful Italian horse belonging to a special friend, photo in the gallery.
Vito had his first holiday with his dad & Thorin when he was 15 weeks old. He was very good, enjoying the countryside walks and meeting new people and dogs.
At 16 weeks, he had his first and only vaccination DHP, no Lepto. We have followed the European protocol of vaccination, only given once the antibodies from his Mum have expired. He has been out and about since eight weeks of age and his own natural immune system has kept him protected from disease. It is widely documented that there is more risk from lack of socialisation than actually catching anything untoward.
After a few months of ring craft training, he had his first show at Malvern (WELKS) at just six months old where he took first place. We have now done a few shows with him and he is doing ok in a strong puppy class. He has already had three handlers so far, due to both of us not being in good health, we need to rely on handlers for our dogs in the ring. Unfortunately, they are always distracted and looking around the ring, it means they are not as focussed as other dogs in the class. It puts us at a disadvantage as they have no bond with their handlers in the way they have with us. Sadly, our situation isn't about to change anytime soon. We shall do just a couple more shows this year then see how he develops for next year.
